Nostalgic is too precious a term to describe the whispering crackle of the drones that occupy 'An Ardent Memory,' the latest release by Pittsburgh, PA's Autumn Pool. CR Webb has meticulously crafted waves of static that rise and fall like the crackle of warped vinyl, slowly consumed by synth-like guitar textures worn by years of tape decay.
The two tracks that occupy this EP are at once soothing enough to seem heartfelt, yet simultaneously are haunted by darker sonic textures that creep right along the surface. "Reservoir" introduces itself like a Steve Reich loop, pulsing and fading until it gives birth to an eerie, sustained chord. Conversely, the centerpiece of the album, "July in Gossamers," lulls the listener into its gentle pallet before erupting in an enormous distorted guitar drone, growing in intensity and violence before coming to a crackling end like a dying fire.
